I just saw the director's cut a few days ago, and was blown away at the scene near the end that was left out of the initial release. This was probably one of the most egregious deleted scenes I have ever seen, as it is not only brilliant in its own right (it shows that the Alien is not just killing indiscriminately, but reproducing, and thus it becomes far more real and not just a generic horror-movie monster) but creates a direct connection with the three subsequent films. I understand that it breaks up the pacing a little, but it is an incredible scene that also gives even more added depth to Ripley as she is forced to finish off her crewmates. A similar scene is played out in Alien Resurrection, but without the same impact as this one.

Thanks for reviewing this, MJV. Alien has always been one of my favorite movies (though I didn't see it until I had graduated high school) but it's tricky to explain to "modern" audiences just why it is so great. The first half is slow, plodding, and even a little boring--by today's standards, that is. I find it intensely interesting, engaging, and entertaining throughout, and the special effects hold up surprisingly well even after all this time. But put it against schlock like Transformers 2 and GI Joe, and sadly, all the kids will wonder where all the explosions are.
